About CeCR

The Clinical Communication Research Laboratory (CeCR Lab *seeker lab*) is based in Wayne State University's School of Medicine and the Karmanos Cancer Institute's Population Studies Disparities Research Program in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Our membership is comprised of behavioral scientists and practicing clinicians who are focused on clinical communication research, training, and translation.

Mission

The CeCR Lab investigates clinical communication between healthcare providers, patients, and their family members to identify opportunities to improve the quality of their communication and, as a result, the equity and effectiveness of treatment decisions, quality of care, and other patient health outcomes.

Vision

Save more lives by innovatively removing interpersonal misunderstandings and systemic barriers that prevent under-represented groups from fully engaging in their cancer care.

Tools & Resources

For Patients

CeCR has tools to help patients communicate more effectively with their cancer care providers. All of these tools have been tested with real patients and their providers and are shown to improve communication and other important patient outcomes.

For Researchers

A centerpiece of our research program is our unobtrusive system for video recording patient-provider interactions. The data makes up the largest video archive of racially diverse medical interactions in the U.S and is available for external collaborators.

For Hospitals & Healthcare Systems

Translation scientific findings into evidence-based curricula is a major priority for the CeCR Lab. We have curriculum on implicit bias and communication to cancer patients about and enrolling in medical clinical trials.
